Where to get local help

Every county has official, free places to call. These are the ones worth knowing before you pay anybody for anything.

Who to call, and for what

  1. 1
Area Agency on Aging — start here
Every California county has one. Free information on every local aging program, and they have no product to sell you.
  2. 2
IHSS office — for paid care hours
Apply through your county. IHSS can pay a caregiver who may be a family member.
  3. 3
Adult Protective Services — if someone is at risk
For suspected abuse, neglect or financial exploitation of an older adult. Reports can be anonymous.
  4. 4
    211 — for everything else
Dial 211 for local help with food, housing, transport and utilities. Free, 24/7, multilingual.
  5. 5
County Veterans Service Officer — for veterans
Free, accredited help with every VA benefit. Never pay for this.
